این مطالعه با هدف توسعه یک پوشش ضد‌میکروبی با استفاده از اوژنول، به‌عنوان یکی از ترکیبات روغن‌های اسانسی، و ترکیب آن با کیتوزان و نانوذرات سیلیکا مزومتخلخل (MSNs) انجام شد تا تشکیل بیوفیلم بر روی تجهیزات پزشکی مهار شود. نانوذرات سیلیکا مزومتخلخل با استفاده از روش استوبر (Stöber) [1] سنتز شدند، سپس با اوژنول بارگذاری شده و در یک پوشش کیتوزانی شبکه‌ای‌شده (crosslinked) قرار گرفتند. پوشش‌ها با استفاده از روش‌هایی مانند میکروسکوپ الکترونی روبشی (SEM)، طیف‌سنجی تبدیل فوریه مادون قرمز (FTIR) و طیف‌سنجی فوتوالکترون پرتو ایکس (XPS) مشخصه‌یابی شدند. آزادسازی اوژنول در شرایط مختلف pH مورد ارزیابی قرار گرفت. فعالیت‌های ضد‌میکروبی و ضد‌بیوفیلمی پوشش‌ها در برابر باکتری‌های Staphylococcus aureus، S. aureus مقاوم به متی‌سیلین (MRSA) و Pseudomonas aeruginosa با استفاده از آزمون‌های مهار رشد، رنگ‌آمیزی Live/Dead و SEM بررسی شد. زیست‌سازگاری نیز با استفاده از سلول‌های فیبروبلاست NIH/3T3 ارزیابی گردید. پوشش حاوی اوژنول، آزادسازی کنترل‌شده‌ای از خود نشان داد؛ به‌طوری‌که میزان آزادسازی در pH برابر با 6 نسبت به pH برابر با 7.4 افزایش یافت. این پوشش به‌طور قابل‌توجهی رشد باکتری‌های پلانکتونیک و تشکیل بیوفیلم را در تمامی باکتری‌های مورد آزمایش کاهش داد و بیش از 94٪ از سلول‌های چسبیده را از بین برد. پوشش کیتوزانی به‌تنهایی فعالیت ضد‌میکروبی محدودی نشان داد. پوشش حاوی اوژنول در شرایط تماس غیرمستقیم، زیست‌سازگاری مناسبی داشت، اما در تماس مستقیم باعث کاهش جزئی فعالیت متابولیکی سلول‌ها شد. پوشش کیتوزان-نانوذرات سیلیکا مزومتخلخلِ آزادکننده اوژنول، به‌طور مؤثری تشکیل بیوفیلم را مهار می‌کند و پتانسیل بالایی به‌عنوان یک سطح ضد‌میکروبی برای تجهیزات پزشکی دارد. افزودن عوامل ضد‌میکروبی مانند اوژنول برای دستیابی به فعالیت ضد‌بیوفیلمی مطلوب ضروری است. این پژوهش می‌تواند مبنایی برای توسعه پوشش‌های مبتنی بر کیتوزان با استفاده از سایر روغن‌های اسانسی یا جایگزین‌های آنتی‌بیوتیکی فراهم کند.
