مسئله آلودگی آب، تحقیقات قابل توجهی را در مورد تکنیک‌های اصلاح پایدار برانگیخته است. پلیمرهای زیستی، چه مصنوعی و چه طبیعی، به دلیل زیست‌تخریب‌پذیری، تجدیدپذیری و خواص قابل تنظیم، به عنوان گزینه‌های سازگار با محیط زیست برای استخراج آلاینده‌ها ظهور کرده‌اند. این بررسی، پیشرفت‌های اخیر در استفاده از مواد پلیمری زیستی برای تصفیه آب را بررسی می‌کند و اثربخشی آنها را در حذف فلزات سنگین، آلاینده‌های آلی و آلاینده‌های نوظهور برجسته می‌کند. همچنین معیارهای مختلف ارزیابی عملکرد، از جمله ظرفیت جذب و تأثیر عواملی مانند pH، دما و غلظت آلاینده، در کنار مقایسه با مواد سنتی را در نظر می‌گیرد. علاوه بر این، پتانسیل احیا و استفاده مجدد از جاذب‌های پلیمری زیستی برای افزایش کاربرد عملی آنها بررسی می‌شود. در نهایت، چالش‌های مربوط به پیاده‌سازی پلیمرهای زیستی - مانند مقیاس‌پذیری، پایداری و مقرون به صرفه بودن - به همراه فرصت‌های آینده برای بهبود کارایی و ادغام آنها در سیستم‌های تصفیه آب پایدار مورد بررسی قرار می‌گیرد.
